James
Hartness was primarily responsible for Springfield,
Vermont's industrialization in the early
1900's. As an inventor with 120 patents to his name,
his inventions propelled his company Jones
& Lamson into prominence as a large-scale
tool machine manufacturer. He had a love
of astronomy that led to his building in
1910 a large tracking telescope and observatory
that continues to operate today. Hartness' accomplishments
and patents are featured in the Hartness-Porter
Astronomy Museum at the Hartness House.
